A big infrastructure project has been approved by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in order to build five major underpasses along the busy Peshawar Ring Road at a cost of about Rs 9.94 billion.
The initiative was undertaken as an extension of the urban development plan by the provincial government to ease traffic congestion and enhance mobility in Peshawar, where the volume of traffic has increased over the years due to the high rate of urban growth and the rise in the number of vehicles. It is hoped that the construction of these underpasses will ease the flow of traffic by separating signal-free and local crossing traffic.
Underpasses to be Built:
- Detour Road – Ring Road Intersection (PDA Toll Plaza)
- Pishtakhara Chowk – Bara Road Ring Road Intersection
- 3 Hazarkhwani Chowk – Hazarkhwani Road Ring Road Intersection
- Jameel Chowk – Phandu Road Ring Road Intersection
- Dalazak Chowk – Dalazak Road Ring Road Intersection
The project is also considered to be a move toward long-term urban planning reforms as it is assisting in modernizing the transport infrastructure of the city and anchoring further commercial and residential development along the Ring Road corridor.
